What Happened
A chartered tour bus carrying 52 passengers,including the driver,crashed on Interstate-90 between exits 49 and 48A in Genesee County,New York,approximately 25 miles east of Buffalo. The accident occurred on August 22, 2025, and resulted in a rollover, ejecting numerous passengers from the vehicle. As of 2:30 p.m. EDT, at least five fatalities, including one child, were confirmed.
According to New York State Police spokesman James O’Callaghan, the bus was returning to New York City from Niagara Falls when the driver lost control, initially striking the median. A subsequent overcorrection led the bus into a ditch, causing the fatal rollover as reported by CNN.
Injuries and Response
More than 40 people were treated at area hospitals for injuries ranging from head trauma to broken limbs, including broken legs and arms according to PBS. Many passengers were reportedly not wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash.
First responders transported accident victims to three local hospitals. Due to the majority of passengers being international travelers from India, china, and the Philippines, hospitals utilized translation devices to facilitate communication.
Inquiry and Cause
the driver survived the accident and is cooperating with authorities. O’Callaghan stated that investigators “have an excellent idea of what happened [and] why the bus lost control,” but did not elaborate on the likely cause of the crash. The investigation is ongoing.
Official Statements
New York Governor Kathy Hochul described the accident as “tragic” in a social media post and affirmed that first responders were assisting all those involved.
