The Evolution of Family E-Cargo
I first reviewed the original Urban Arrow in 2020, when my kids were 3 and 5. Back then, nothing delighted a couple of preschoolers more then strapping into a big, motorized cargo bike and scooting around town, shrieking, with the wind blowing in their tiny faces. Now, with my children aged 8 and 10, the appeal has shifted – discretion is key! My 8-year-old even crouched down in the box to avoid being seen by friends.
All this highlights a key challenge in the e-cargo bike market: children grow. While my Tern GSD remains a reliable companion, the Urban Arrow FamilyNext Pro offers features I wish I’d had when my kids were younger, and continues to be appealing as thay get older.
Key Upgrades: Bounce and Beyond
The most instantly noticeable improvements in the FamilyNext Pro are the redesigned cargo box and the addition of front fork suspension. (It’s also available in a stylish new sage green, though my test bike was black.) These changes aren’t merely cosmetic; they substantially enhance the riding experience and passenger comfort.
The new cargo box boasts a more robust construction and improved weather protection.Urban Arrow claims a 20% increase in box volume compared to previous models, providing ample space for children, groceries, or a combination of both. the suspension fork, a first for Urban Arrow, smooths out bumps and vibrations, making for a more pleasant ride for both the cyclist and passengers. This is especially noticeable on uneven pavement or gravel paths.
Riding the FamilyNext Pro: A Refined Experience
The FamilyNext Pro builds upon Urban Arrow’s reputation for stable and intuitive handling. The bike feels remarkably balanced, even when fully loaded. The Bosch Performance Line motor provides ample power for tackling hills and headwinds, and the Enviolo Automatiq continuously variable transmission offers seamless gear changes. this eliminates the need for manual shifting, allowing riders to focus on the road and their passengers.
I tested the bike with both one and two children in the cargo box, along with a week’s worth of groceries. The bike handled the load with ease, maintaining a comfortable speed and responsive steering. The hydraulic disc brakes provide excellent stopping power, even in wet conditions. The integrated lights and fenders are a welcome addition, enhancing visibility and protecting riders from the elements.
