Urgent Call for Help: Kanawha Charleston Humane Association Faces Overcrowding Crisis
Kanawha Charleston Humane Association Faces Overcrowding Crisis
The Kanawha Charleston Humane Association (KCHA) is experiencing an unusual surge in animal population. Currently, nearly 400 animals are under their care, a number that has surprised staff, especially for November. This overcrowding is not limited to KCHA; it’s a national issue.
Staff Efforts and Limitations
Employees at KCHA are working extra hours to help these animals find homes. Despite recent successful adoption events, the shelter is still over capacity. Angie Gillenwater, the community engagement manager, noted that they can only accept sick or injured animals at this time. They want to help all animals but face tough decisions due to space limitations.
Health Concerns in Overcrowded Conditions
Madison Adkins, who mainly cares for sick animals, highlighted that the crowded environment makes it challenging to manage health issues. Illnesses like parvovirus spread more easily when animals share ventilation systems. Adkins is worried about the shelter’s limited capacity to protect all animals.
Call for Support
KCHA is open to help through donations, adoptions, fostering, or volunteer time. The staff is doing their best to care for all animals while seeking solutions for this crisis. They appreciate any assistance from the community.
