Uriah Rennie, a‍ pioneer as the first Black ​referee in ‌the Premier League, has died ‍at age ‌65. The Sheffield​ and Hallamshire County Football Association announced his death‌ Sunday. Rennie’s role as a referee spanned ⁣over ⁤300 matches,‌ including 175 in England’s top flight, marking him as a‌ key figure‍ in English soccer.

born in Jamaica and raised in⁣ Sheffield,Rennie made history in 1997 when ⁣he ‌officiated a Premier League game between⁢ Derby ⁣County and Wimbledon. His career, which ended in 2008, paved the way for future generations. Sam Allison became the‌ next Black ‌official ⁤to take charge of a Premier League game ⁢15 ​years later, officiating a match between Sheffield United and Luton Town in⁤ 2023.

The ⁣Sheffield and Hallamshire County Football Association expressed⁤ their condolences on social⁣ media, stating⁢ they were “deeply⁣ saddened” by the passing ​of their former⁣ chair and “trailblazing referee.”

In April, ​Rennie​ told the BBC he was learning to walk again after a rare condition left ⁢him paralyzed from‌ the waist down.

⁢ ⁤”Incredibly sad to hear of the passing of referee Uriah Rennie. A pioneer, trailblazer ⁤and a bloody good ref,” said former England and⁣ liverpool player Stan ⁢Collymore on social ⁢media. “Rest in peace, ref.”
