Uribe Freed: Colombia Supreme Court Orders Immediate Release

The Superior Court of the Judicial District of Bogotá ordered the immediate freedom of former Colombian President Álvaro Uribe (2002-2010) on Tuesday.This decision comes after Uribe was initially sentenced to 12 years of house arrest in a case involving bribery. The court is acting while the appeal to that initial sentence is resolved.
The Criminal Decision Chamber of the Court cited the need to protect Uribe’s “basic right to individual freedom.” The court overturned the decision made by Judge Sandra Heredia of the 44th Criminal Court of Bogotá, which had ordered his immediate detention.
According to the court document, “Leave without effect the quarter of the ruling issued on August 1, 2025, by the 44th Criminal Court of the Circuit of Bogotá, as soon as he ordered the immediate deprivation of the freedom of the citizen Álvaro Uribe Vélez; Until the corresponding criminal decision room, of this Court defines the appeal filed against that determination of first instance. Consequently,dispose that the court immediately acted,issue the freedom ticket in favor of the tutelante.”
Uribe, the founder and leader of the right-wing Democratic Center party, became the first Colombian president to be criminally convicted on August 1st, after Heredia found him guilty of bribery.
