Colombian presidential Candidate Miguel Uribe Turbay Shot at Rally

Miguel Uribe Turbay,a colombian senator and presidential candidate,is in critical condition after being shot at a campaign rally in Bogota. The attack occurred in the Fontibon area, according to the Attorney General’s office.
Uribe Turbay, 39, sustained two gunshot wounds. Video footage showed aides assisting him, with visible bleeding from his head. He was admitted to the Santa Fe Foundation hospital in critical condition and underwent neurosurgical and vascular procedures.
His wife, Maria Claudia Tarazone, initially posted on X that he was “fighting for his life.” She later updated that he survived the initial operation but remains in intensive care as doctors work to stabilize him. The hospital reported procedures were performed on his head and left thigh.
A 15-year-old suspect was apprehended at the scene with a firearm,according to police chief General Carlos Triana. The suspect is also being treated for a leg injury.

President Gustavo Petro said the government is offering a $730,000 reward for data related to the attack. The investigation will focus on identifying who ordered the shooting and any security protocol failures, Petro stated.
Uribe Turbay announced his presidential bid in March, hoping to succeed Petro in the upcoming elections. he was accompanied by 21 people, including councilman Andres Barrios, at the time of the shooting. His mother, a journalist, was kidnapped and killed in 1991.

Former Colombian President Alvaro Uribe called the attack an assault on the country’s hope. He canceled a trip to France due to the severity of the situation.
Messages of support have come from across Latin America. chilean President gabriel Boric stated there is no room for violence in a democracy, while Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa condemned all forms of violence and intolerance.
