- Why it Matters: A chance to witness a celestial event caused by Comet 8P/Tuttle.
- What’s Next: Clear skies and a northern horizon are needed for optimal viewing.
One of the interesting space phenomena to observe is meteor showers. This December, people will have the chance to witness the Ursid meteor shower.
The Ursid meteor shower is relatively rare and generally only produces about five meteors per hour. This phenomenon is related to Comet 8P/tuttle, a periodic comet that orbits the Sun in an elliptical path for about 13.5 years. The Ursid meteor shower occurs due to ice and dust debris left behind by Comet 8P/Tuttle as it passes through the solar system on its journey around the Sun.
Can only be seen in northern Indonesia
Astronomy expert from the National Innovation Research Agency (BRIN),Thomas Djamaluddin, revealed that the Ursid meteor shower is quite difficult to observe in Indonesia. “The Ursid meteor shower radiates near the north celestial pole, so it is difficult to observe from Java, Bali, Nusa Tenggara,” explained Thomas.
However, there is still a possibility that Sumatra,Kalimantan,Sulawesi and northern Maluku can still see the Ursid meteor shower.
“The viewing time is after midnight Monday-Tuesday (22-23/12/2025),” added Thomas. Observing the Ursid meteor shower does not require tools.”You only need clear weather conditions, away from light pollution, and the field of view to the northern sky is not blocked by trees or buildings,” concluded Thomas.

The Ursid meteor shower, while not as prolific as some others like the Geminids, offers a unique opportunity for observers in the northern parts of Indonesia. Its proximity to the north celestial pole makes it challenging to view from more southerly latitudes. The reliance on clear, dark skies highlights the importance of minimizing light pollution for astronomical observation.
Viewing requirements
- Clear Weather: Essential for visibility.
- Dark Skies: Away from city lights.
- Northern Horizon: Unobstructed view of the northern sky.
- No Equipment Needed: Visible with the naked eye.
