Ursula K. Le Guin’s Portland Home to Become Historic Landmark

The former Portland home of Ursula K. Le Guin, the acclaimed author and pioneer of speculative fiction, has been added to the National Register of Historic Places, according to a statement from the U.S. Department of the Interior’s National Park Service. The designation, announced on July 24, 2026, recognizes the 19th-century residence as a site of cultural and literary significance tied to Le Guin’s legacy.

The house, located in Portland’s Alberta Arts District, was where Le Guin lived from the 1960s until her death in 2018. The National Park Service cited its association with the author’s work, including her 1969 novel The Left Hand of Darkness, which redefined science fiction and earned her a Hugo Award. The agency also highlighted the property’s architectural integrity, noting its Victorian-era design and preservation of original interior features.

“This listing underscores the enduring impact of Ursula K. Le Guin’s contributions to literature and her role in shaping the speculative fiction genre,” said National Park Service spokesperson Emily Carter in a written statement. “The property stands as a tangible link to her creative process and the cultural milieu of 20th-century American literature.”

Le Guin, who grew up in California but spent decades in Oregon, was a central figure in the Pacific Northwest’s literary community. Her writings, which explored themes of ecology, gender, and social structures, influenced generations of authors. The National Register listing follows years of advocacy by local historians and literary groups, who argued that the house warranted protection as a cultural landmark.

The property’s inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places does not restrict private ownership but ensures it is formally recognized for its historical value. A representative for the Le Guin family declined to comment on the listing, citing ongoing private matters.

Portland’s designation of Le Guin’s home aligns with broader efforts to preserve sites tied to influential female authors. In 2023, the home of poet Muriel Rukeyser in New York was also listed, reflecting a growing emphasis on documenting women’s contributions to literary history. For Oregon, the move highlights the state’s role in nurturing voices that redefined American storytelling.

Local officials praised the decision as a milestone for cultural preservation. “Ursula K.
