Silver Memorial Bridge Closed After Tractor-Trailer Crash, Fuel and Cream Liqueur Spill into Ohio River

GALLIA COUNTY, Ohio – A crash involving a tractor-trailer late Tuesday night has shut down U.S. 35 on the Silver Memorial Bridge, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol. The incident, reported shortly before 9:30 p.m., resulted in a significant spill of both diesel fuel and an unusual cargo: approximately 4,000 gallons of cream liqueur.

The initial impact affected the eastbound lanes of U.S. 35. However, emergency crews subsequently closed both eastbound and westbound traffic to facilitate a comprehensive cleanup operation. The wreckage from the crash is partially submerged in the Ohio River, complicating recovery efforts.

Authorities reported that nearly 200 gallons of diesel fuel were released in the collision, adding to the environmental concerns stemming from the cream liqueur spill. The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is assisting with the cleanup, working to contain the spread of both substances and mitigate potential damage to the river ecosystem.

Fortunately, no injuries were reported as a result of the crash. The OSHP has indicated that the bridge closure could last for several hours as crews work to remove the wreckage, clean the roadway, and assess any structural damage to the bridge itself.

The Silver Memorial Bridge connects Mason County, West Virginia, and Gallia County, Ohio. The closure is impacting traffic in both states, forcing motorists to seek alternate routes. WOWK News reported that the accident involved a single tractor-trailer traveling into West Virginia from Ohio.

While bridge failures are, thankfully, rare events, the incident brings to mind the importance of infrastructure maintenance and safety protocols. A Wikipedia list of bridge failures details incidents dating back centuries, highlighting the potential for catastrophic consequences when bridges are compromised. However, there is no indication that this incident involves structural failure of the bridge itself.

The cleanup operation presents a unique challenge given the nature of the spilled materials. Diesel fuel poses a direct threat to aquatic life and water quality, while the cream liqueur, though less immediately toxic, could contribute to oxygen depletion as it decomposes. The EPA will likely monitor the river closely for any adverse effects.

Motorists are advised to avoid the area and check for updates before attempting to cross the Silver Memorial Bridge. WSAZ is providing ongoing coverage of the situation and will continue to report on the progress of the cleanup and the estimated time for reopening the bridge.

The long-term impact of the spill on the Ohio River remains to be seen. Environmental agencies will be tasked with assessing the extent of the contamination and implementing measures to restore the river’s health. The incident serves as a reminder of the potential environmental risks associated with the transportation of hazardous materials and the importance of swift and effective response measures in the event of an accident.
