Gaza Humanitarian Foundation: Aid Efforts Amidst Controversy
Updated June 15, 2025
As fields of wheat line the road to Dover, Del., the scene underscores the stark contrast to the conflict in Gaza. The Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), a US- and Israeli-backed entity created to deliver humanitarian assistance, is registered in this rural state. the foundation’s origins have come under scrutiny as desperate Palestinians seek aid.
Eyewitness accounts allege Israeli forces fired on crowds approaching aid sites, prompting an investigation. Israel accuses Hamas of sabotaging aid operations. The GHF reported eight local Palestinian workers died in a hamas attack on one of their buses. Separately, at least 15 Palestinians died from Israeli fire, according to local hospitals. The Israeli military stated troops fired warning shots at individuals perceived as a threat, and an aircraft struck one person.
The GHF says it intends to feed civilians in Gaza, where the UN reports over two million people face starvation. The foundation, employing armed american security contractors, operates independently of the UN, the primary aid supplier in Gaza. Critics claim the GHF supports an Israeli plan to displace Palestinians into smaller areas. Israel contends this choice system prevents Hamas from stealing aid.Hamas denies these allegations.
In March, Israel halted food and aid supplies to Gaza, resuming its war against Hamas after a two-month ceasefire. This move, widely condemned, aimed to pressure Hamas to release hostages. The UN and aid groups demanded access amid growing international condemnation.
Amid this backdrop, the GHF emerged, promoted by Israel and supported by the Trump administration. Details about its funding and origins remained unclear. A leaked document outlined the GHF’s plan to provide aid from secure hubs in Gaza, protected by armed contractors and the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), bypassing the UN.
The document listed executives and advisers, including Nate Mook, former head of World Central Kitchen, and David Beasley, former World Food Program chief, tho neither was ultimately involved. A retired US lieutenant-general was also listed on its advisory board.
Israel maintains it does not fund humanitarian assistance to Gaza. The US government also stated it does not fund the foundation. John Acree, GHF’s executive director and former US government humanitarian official, declined interviews. A GHF press release announced the appointment of Reverend Johnnie Moore, a Christian evangelical preacher and supporter of Israel, as executive chairman.
“activists disguised as humanitarians clutch their pearls and rush out press releases in support of these failed systems,” said Mr. Moore in a Fox News article. “They keep spreading with no scrutiny the profane lies of Hamas.”
the GHF released videos showing Palestinians thanking President Trump at its distribution sites. Politics have become intertwined with aid in Gaza, yet the true backers remain unclear.
What’s next
As the situation unfolds, scrutiny of the GHF’s operations and funding is likely to continue, especially as the need for humanitarian aid in Gaza remains critical.
