US and Iran Negotiate 45-Day Ceasefire Proposal

The United States, Iran and a coalition of regional mediators are engaged in intensive negotiations to establish a 45-day ceasefire aimed at halting hostilities and creating a path toward a permanent resolution of the ongoing conflict in West Asia.

According to reports from Diplomat News Network and Axios, the discussions are being characterized by officials as a last-chance effort to prevent a severe escalation of the war. These talks are occurring against a backdrop of heightened threats of military action targeting the infrastructure and energy sectors of Iran.

Proposed Two-Phase Framework

Sources familiar with the negotiations indicate that the parties are exploring a two-phase agreement. The first phase would consist of a temporary 45-day ceasefire, during which time negotiators would work toward a permanent settlement. The second phase would involve formalizing the specific steps required to end hostilities entirely.

Diplomatic communication is currently being conducted through both mediator-facilitated discussions and direct messaging between U.S. Envoy Stephen Witkoff and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi.

Mediators from Turkey, Egypt, and Pakistan are actively facilitating the dialogue between Washington and Tehran. Despite these efforts, sources stated that the likelihood of reaching a deal within 48 hours remains low, citing deep-seated mistrust between the two nations.

Diplomatic Obstacles and Iranian Stance

A senior U.S. Official reported that several proposals have been tabled in recent days. However, Iranian authorities have not formally accepted any of these offers. This hesitation reflects Tehran’s insistence on safeguarding its strategic interests amid the conflict.

The current crisis follows a period of prolonged tensions and previous attempts at diplomacy. Records indicate that Iran and the United States had previously engaged in two rounds of negotiations between April and June 2025, and again in February 2026, aimed at reaching a nuclear peace agreement. Those rounds took place at venues including the Al Alam Palace in Muscat, Oman, the Embassy of the Sultanate of Oman in Rome, and Geneva, Switzerland.

Broader Conflict Context

The current negotiations are situated within a broader complex of conflicts and instabilities in the region. The conflict involves various dimensions, including the Iran-Israel conflict, the Hezbollah-Israel conflict, and the Twelve-Day War.

Additional factors contributing to the regional instability include the Red Sea crisis and an Iranian financial crisis that began in 2024. Iran has also faced internal instability, including protests and massacres throughout 2025 and 2026.

Military escalations have seen Iranian strikes targeting British military facilities in Akrotiri and Dhekelia, as well as targets in Saudi Arabia, including an Aramco refinery. Other affected areas and targets have included Bahrain, Jordan, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Syria, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates, and the Kurdistan Region.
