On Monday, the U.S. Treasury Department imposed sanctions on three Russian entities, including a media group, that Washington has accused of engaging in destabilizing activities overseas. Segodnya, Russia’s Dmitry Kishlyov, General Director of the TV Network TV-Novosti NGO Eurasia and its director Nelly Partenko.
A statement from the US Treasury Department said the sanctions targeted two individuals and three entities “for their involvement in Russia’s destabilizing activities overseas.” The US accuses the individuals and entities of engaging in reporting activities through “cyberspace capabilities” in regions including Europe, Africa and the Americas.
U.S. officials asserted that they did not target the two individuals and the three Russian entities “because of their reporting,” but rather for “alleged covert influence operations that are not journalism. The U.S. government believes the three media organizations are closely coordinating efforts assigned to them by senior Russian officials.”
In a related development to the Ukraine conflict, during a meeting in Washington DC on the same day, US President Joe Biden and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer reaffirmed their firm support for Ukraine and condemned the cooperation of Russia, Iran, North Korea and China.
Minutes of the meeting released by the White House stated, “The two leaders had an in-depth discussion on a range of foreign policy issues of mutual interest. Both sides reaffirmed their firm support for Ukraine.”
Biden and Starmer also discussed US-UK cooperation in clean energy and advanced technology, the AUKUS trilateral security arrangement with Australia, and opportunities to strengthen bilateral economic ties.
