US Anti-Drone Tech: Ukraine to Middle East – WSJ
U.S.Reallocates Drone Defense Tech Amid Mideast Tensions
Updated June 7, 2025
The U.S.is diverting specialized fuzes, crucial for ground-to-air rocket systems designed to counter drone attacks, to military units in the Middle East. This reallocation comes as the U.S. prepares for potential escalations with Iran and Houthi militants in Yemen.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth identified the redirection of these Advanced Precision Kill Weapon System fuzes as an ”urgent issue,” according to a Pentagon notification to Congress last week. The Biden management initially procured these fuzes for Ukraine.
The decision surfaces as Russia has increased its drone assaults on Ukraine. President Volodymyr Zelensky said earlier this month that Russia has launched over 20,000 drones at Ukraine since the start of 2025.On June 1, Russia launched 472 drones in a single night, marking the largest swarm as the full-scale invasion began.
According to a source within Ukraine’s military intelligence, Russia is increasing production and constructing new launch sites. This expansion could enable Russia to deploy more than 500 long-range drones nightly against Ukraine.
What’s next
The shift in drone defense technology allocation highlights evolving U.S.priorities amid escalating global tensions. The impact on both Middle Eastern security and Ukraine’s defense capabilities remains to be seen as the situation develops.
