Trump, Xi to restart Trade Talks Amid Tensions Over Rare Earth Minerals
Updated June 05, 2025
President donald Trump announced Thursday that trade talks with china will resume after a “very positive conclusion” to a conversation with Chinese President Xi Jinping. The discussions aim to break the impasse on tariffs and global supplies of rare earth minerals, marking their first call in over four months.
Trump stated on social media that teams from both countries will meet soon at a location to be determined. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, and U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer will represent the U.S. in these negotiations.
According to the Chinese Foreign Ministry, Trump initiated the call.Xinhua, China’s state media, reported that Xi urged Trump to reverse negative measures against China. trump, in turn, indicated that Chinese students are welcome in the U.S., despite earlier administration vows to revoke some visas.
Xi likened the U.S.-China relationship to a large ship, emphasizing the need for careful navigation to avoid “interference and even sabotage,” Xinhua reported.

The trade negotiations between the U.S. and China faltered after a May 12 agreement to reduce tariff rates. The U.S. has accused China of limiting exports of critical minerals, while China objects to U.S. restrictions on advanced chips and student visas.
Trump has lowered tariffs on Chinese goods from 145% to 30% for 90 days to facilitate talks, and China has reduced taxes on U.S. goods from 125% to 10%. these fluctuations have caused volatility in global markets and threaten trade between the two nations.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent previously suggested that direct communication between Trump and Xi was necessary to restart negotiations. However, underlying tensions between the two countries persist. Trump aims to reduce U.S. reliance on Chinese factories, while China seeks to advance in technologies like electric vehicles and artificial intelligence.
In 2024, the U.S. had a $295 billion trade imbalance with China, according to the census bureau.China’s manufacturing focus has propelled it to economic power, but it faces a slowing economy due to real estate issues and pandemic-related consumer spending declines.
Trump and Xi last spoke in January, discussing trade and fentanyl prevention. Trump had previously expressed optimism about a major deal but later accused China of violating its agreements.
“correcting the course of the big ship of Sino-US relations requires us to steer well and set the direction, especially to eliminate all kinds of interference and even destruction, which is especially important,”

Xi also cautioned Trump to handle the Taiwan issue carefully to avoid conflict, according to Xinhua.
