US Company Releases 600,000 Mosquitoes to Fight Tiger Mosquitoes Without Pesticides
An American company is releasing 600,000 sterile male mosquitoes into residential gardens near Washington, D.C., marking the first initiative of its kind targeting private homeowners in the United States, according to international news reports. Led by Bee Safe Mosquito Control, the deployment uses the Wolbachia bacterial method to combat the spread of the invasive Asian tiger mosquito, known scientifically as Aedes albopictus.
How the Wolbachia Mosquito Treatment Works
According to reporting from Agence France-Presse, the treatment relies on releasing male mosquitoes that do not bite humans. These males carry the Wolbachia bacteria, which sterilizes wild females when they mate, preventing their eggs from hatching. The program distributes the insects under the commercial name “ZAP Males.” Each enrolled property receives 1,500 mosquitoes per week over a 16-week period during the summer months.
Founder Todd Montgomery launched Bee Safe Mosquito Control in 2023 after working as an electrical engineer, according to regional reporting. This threat gained renewed urgency following the detection of the first locally acquired case of dengue in northern Virginia.

Singapore launched its comprehensive public Wolbachia initiative in 2016, scaling up releases to more than 10 million mosquitoes weekly. Studies published in the New England Journal of Medicine indicate that such population-suppression strategies can reduce Aedes aegypti populations and lower dengue fever risks by over 70%. Additionally, corporate proposals in May 2026 sought authorization to release 32 million mosquitoes across sites in Florida and California.
Local residents in the Washington suburbs have welcomed the alternative to chemical sprays.
