US Delegation Makes Historic Trip to Damascus,Seeking Syrian Transition Roadmap
Damascus,Syria - In a significant diplomatic move,a delegation from the United States government arrived in Damascus on Friday, marking the first such visit as the fall of bashar al-Assad’s regime. The delegation, led by Middle East advisor Daniel Rubinstein, aims to engage with the Syrian interim government and other key stakeholders to discuss the principles of a political transition and explore ways the US can assist the nation’s recovery.
Joining Rubinstein are Barbara Leaf, the State Department’s point person for the Middle East, and Roger carstens, the lead negotiator for hostage releases. This delegation represents the first group of US diplomats to set foot in the Syrian capital since Assad fled to Russia in December, ousted by an insurgent coalition led by the Islamist Levant Liberation Organization (HTS).
Rubinstein will spearhead US diplomatic efforts, engaging directly with the Syrian people and key players while coordinating with allies and partners to promote the principles of political transition outlined at the Aqaba summit in Jordan on December 14th.
Seeking a Unified Vision for Syria’s future
The Aqaba summit, convened by Jordanian King Abdullah II, brought together high-ranking officials from the US, France, Turkey, eight Arab nations, the United Nations, and the European Union. The gathering aimed to forge a unified stance on Syria’s future, emphasizing stability, security, respect for minorities, and the prevention of radicalism.
Participants agreed on the need to build strong institutions, form an inclusive government representing all Syrians, and hold accountable those responsible for past atrocities.
The US delegation plans to meet with HTS representatives to discuss these principles and engage with a broad spectrum of Syrian society, including civil society members, activists, representatives from diverse communities, and other influential voices. The goal is to understand their vision for the country and explore how the US can provide meaningful support.
Sanctions Relief and the Search for Missing Americans
Earlier this week, the US signaled its willingness to consider lifting economic sanctions imposed on the assad regime and easing other restrictions, contingent upon improvements in the situation on the ground.
The delegation will also use this chance to seek information about the fate of American citizens who disappeared under the previous regime. Among them is Austin Tice, a journalist and former Marine who traveled to Syria in 2012 to cover the burgeoning civil war. Tice vanished in August of that year while preparing to leave the country.
