US Denies Visas to Iranian Football Delegation for 2026 World Cup
US Denies Visas to iranian Football Officials Ahead of World Cup draw
A diplomatic snag threatens to overshadow the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup draw. The US State Department has denied visa applications for a nine-member delegation from Iran’s football federation, effectively barring them from attending the draw ceremony in Washington D.C. on December 5th.
among those denied visas are Mehdi Taj, the president of Iran’s Football Federation, and Amir Ghalenoei, the head coach of the Iranian national team, known as Team Melli. This decision raises questions about the intersection of sports and international politics, particularly given a recent executive order from president Donald Trump.
That executive order, issued earlier in 2023, restricts travel from a dozen countries, including Iran. However, it specifically includes exceptions for participation in major international sporting events like the World Cup and the Olympics. The visa denials appear to contradict this provision, according to reporting by the Sports Business Journal.
Despite the current hurdle, FIFA officials are expressing confidence that Iran’s participation in the 2026 tournament itself will not be impacted.FIFA Vice President Victor Montagliani stated that the location of matches will be steadfast solely by the draw, and not by political considerations. He further indicated that FIFA has received assurances from the host nations – the US, Canada, and Mexico – guaranteeing entry for all qualified teams.
The December draw will be crucial in determining the path for all participating nations, including Iran, as they vie for a spot in the expanded 48-team tournament. While the visa issue presents a challenge for the Iranian delegation, FIFA’s assurances suggest that the broader competition remains unaffected, for now.The situation underscores the delicate balance between geopolitical tensions and the unifying power of international sports.
