Ukraine Seeks Alternative Plan for War with Russia Amid Western Allies’ Calls for Realistic Goals
More than two-and-a-half years into Russia’s war on Ukraine, Kiev is seeking an alternative plan for war with Moscow, while Western allies want it to set realistic goals for the war.
Since the start of the war, Kiev has set its sights on removing Russian forces from all Ukrainian territory, but with Moscow gaining on the battlefield, Ukraine needs to develop a more realistic plan for the future, as European diplomats confirmed to the press.
Western allies support Kiev’s goal of regaining its territory, but some of them believe that setting realistic goals can help Western countries justify continuing to send arms and aid.
Ukraine’s Victory Plan
President Zelensky said Wednesday that the victory plan he plans to present to President Biden this month could bolster Kiev’s power and have a psychological effect that could force Russia to end its war diplomatically.
He added that the plan, if the partners support it, will be easier for Ukraine to force Russia to end the war.
Zelensky described the plan as a significant strengthening of Ukraine’s power and, in his opinion, will have a psychological and political impact on Russia’s decision to end this war.
Western Allies’ Support
Western allies support Kiev’s goal of regaining its territory with long-range missiles.
The visit comes at a sensitive time for Ukraine, whose forces are facing problems on the country’s eastern front despite a surprise offensive launched in early August in Russia’s Kursk region.
To counter Russia’s advances, Kiev hopes to get permission to use Western long-range missiles, particularly to strike targets deep inside Russian territory.
Russia’s Attack on Ukraine’s Capital Kiev
Kiev and Moscow have repeatedly expressed a desire for a ceasefire or peace talks, but both sides are far from such a meeting.
Ukraine has demanded the withdrawal of Russian forces before it sits at the negotiating table, while the Kremlin demands that Kiev give up its lost territories and abandon its ambitions to join NATO.
