President Zelensky expressed gratitude to the president of the United States, Steve Witkoff, and Jared Kushner on social media platform X, describing the three rounds of negotiations as substantive and productive. Zelensky emphasized the urgent need to address the upcoming winter challenges, asking Washington for additional Patriot air defense systems and a dedicated winter package to protect energy infrastructure.
“We hope to be able to reach agreements with our American partners and we count on the support of European partners,” Zelensky wrote in his statement. The Ukrainian leader stressed that economic guarantees are just as vital as security assurances to ensure the country can recover and rebuild after hostilities cease. Representatives from Germany, France, and the United Kingdom also joined the third phase of talks to reinforce backing for Kyiv.
Escalating Tensions and Regional Attacks
Diplomatic efforts unfolded against a backdrop of ongoing violence on the ground. A late-night drone attack on Sunday struck Sevastopol, a port city on the Black Sea in Crimea, killing a young woman and injuring three others. The local casualty toll was confirmed via Telegram by Mikhail Razvozhayev, the Russian-appointed governor of the city.
