According to the federal figures, the number of infants born with the infection has risen by nearly 700% over the past decade, culminating in 279 stillbirths and infant deaths in 2023 alongside nearly 4,000 reported cases in 2024.
Targeting Underserved Settings and Maternity Care Deserts
To reach patients who miss regular prenatal screenings, the Health Resources and Services Administration is directing the $4 million toward non-traditional health care settings. According to HHS, rapid point-of-care tests will be deployed in emergency departments, maternal and child health programs, correctional facilities, and addiction treatment centers to diagnose and treat patients during a single medical visit. This strategy seeks to bridge gaps created by a severe lack of maternity providers nationwide. A March of Dimes report cited by federal health officials indicates that over a third of U.S. counties lack a single doctor, nurse, midwife, or medical center specializing in maternity care, creating geographic barriers known as maternity care deserts. According to HHS estimates, 83% of congenital syphilis cases recorded in 2023 could have been prevented had the affected patients received timely testing and treatment. Standard laboratory tests often require follow-up visits that many patients cannot complete due to distance, cost, or transportation hurdles. Point-of-care diagnostics eliminate those processing delays by delivering results immediately.
Clinical Context and Rising National Rates
Syphilis is a bacterial sexually transmitted infection that can easily pass from a pregnant patient to an unborn child, resulting in congenital syphilis. Without early intervention, the condition can cause miscarriage, stillbirth, and severe lifelong medical complications for surviving infants, including bone deformities and neurological damage. Public health authorities recommend that all pregnant patients undergo syphilis screening at their first prenatal visit and again prior to delivery. Although a single dose of benzathine penicillin G can effectively cure the infection and prevent transmission to the fetus, sliding rates of prenatal care and persistent screening gaps have allowed transmission rates to climb. According to federal surveillance data, syphilis rates among pregnant women jumped 222% between 2016 and 2022, followed by another 28% increase between 2022 and 2024. Federal officials emphasize that expanding immediate testing options remains essential to reversing these trends and protecting newborns from an entirely preventable disease.
