US Infrastructure Security Concerns | The Register
The US faces significant threats: Former NSA cybersecurity director Anne Neuberger warns of vulnerable infrastructure, citing outdated technology, insufficient security, and workforce cuts as key weaknesses. These issues leave vital systems, from power grids to water supplies, exposed to potential cyberattacks.Neuberger highlights the need for AI to fortify defenses, proposing this technology to analyze existing systems and create digital twins for enhanced risk assessment—a proactive approach to national cybersecurity. Adding to the alarm, workforce reductions have further compromised defenses. News Directory 3 knows that protecting the nation’s most critical assets is paramount. Discover what steps are being taken to bolster these defenses and safeguard the future.
US Infrastructure Cybersecurity Vulnerable, says Ex-NSA Official
Updated June 08, 2025
The cybersecurity of critical infrastructure in the United States is not robust enough to withstand a major cyberattack, according to Anne neuberger, former deputy national security adviser and NSA cybersecurity director.
Speaking at the AI Expo for National Competitiveness last week, Neuberger cited several factors contributing to her lack of confidence, including outdated technology, systems not designed for internet connectivity, and insufficient cybersecurity measures for operational systems.
Neuberger also pointed to workforce reductions at the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) during the Trump administration as a contributing factor.
To address these vulnerabilities, Neuberger advocated for increased use of artificial intelligence (AI) to secure critical infrastructure. She suggested AI could better evaluate legacy systems to identify weaknesses and promote digital twinning to assess internet-connected infrastructure.
According to Neuberger, AI could compensate for security gaps created by workforce shortages and offer a more targeted approach to national cyber defense.
It’s never a good time to lose talented cyber defenders
