Peace talks between the United States and Iran in Islamabad, Pakistan, ended on April 12, 2026, without an agreement to end the war. Vice President JD Vance confirmed that the 21 hours of negotiations failed to produce a deal.

The failure of the diplomatic effort has led to an immediate escalation in military posture. President Donald Trump announced that the U.S. Navy would begin blockading the strait of Hormuz and interdicting vessels in international waters that have paid tolls to Iran.

Details of the Islamabad Negotiations

The U.S. Delegation was led by Vice President JD Vance, who was accompanied by nearly 300 other officials. This significant deployment of personnel followed previous criticisms that the U.S. Had relied too heavily on special envoy Steve Witkoff.

Iran deployed two planeloads of negotiators, including foreign minister Abbas Araghchi, the chief negotiator from 2015, and Ali Bagheri Kani, the deputy secretary of the supreme national security council and chief negotiator in previous nuclear talks. The Iranian delegation also included members of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) to ensure that military gains were not conceded during diplomatic discussions.

The scope of the talks attempted to address a 20-year dispute over Iran’s nuclear ambitions, as well as newer complications including U.S. Compensation for an attack on Iran and the future control of the strait of Hormuz. The depth of the Iranian technical preparation was highlighted by a technical explanation on nuclear facility safety that exceeded 100 pages.

Key Points of Contention

According to Vice President JD Vance, the primary cause of the impasse was Iran’s refusal to give up its nuclear program. The Iranian parliamentary speaker stated that the U.S. Failed to gain the trust of the Iranian delegation during the sessions.

Key Points of Contention

Officials indicated that the deadlock was further compounded by disagreements regarding Iran’s nuclear stockpile and the status of the strait of Hormuz.

U.S. Military Response and Blockade

Following the collapse of the talks, President Donald Trump detailed a series of naval operations via a Truth Social post. He stated that the U.S. Navy would start BLOCKADING any and all Ships trying to enter, or leave, the Strait of Hormuz.

The President’s directives include the following actions:

  • The destruction of mines laid by Iranians in the straits.
  • The interdiction of any vessel in international waters that has paid a toll to Iran.
  • The implementation of a blockade involving unspecified other countries.

President Trump characterized the Iranian tolls as an Illegal Act of EXTORTION and warned that any Iranian who fires at the U.S. Or at peaceful vessels will be blown to hell.

Iran will not be allowed to profit off this Illegal Act of EXTORTION. They want money and, more importantly, they want Nuclear.

Donald Trump

The U.S. Administration maintains that the blockade will begin shortly to prevent Iran from profiting through illegal tolls and to address the nuclear ambitions that stalled the peace talks in Pakistan.
