As tensions escalate over Iran’s nuclear program, the United States’ arsenal holds a unique and possibly decisive weapon: the GBU-57 E/B Massive Ordnance Penetrator, or MOP. This 30,000-pound, precision-guided bomb, sometimes called a “bunker-buster,” is designed to destroy deeply buried and heavily fortified targets.
The MOP’s potential role centers on Iran’s Fordow facility, constructed inside a mountain. Israeli ambassador to the U.S.Yechiel Leiter told fox News that eliminating Fordow is essential. The U.S.-made MOP is uniquely suited for this task, as Israel’s current weaponry lacks the necessary power.
Deployment of the MOP would likely involve B-2 Spirit stealth bombers, capable of long-range, undetected missions. Colin Demarest, a defense reporter, noted the MOP is the most potent non-nuclear option available.
The Pentagon’s autonomous weapons tester described the MOP as designed to attack hard and deeply buried targets like bunkers and tunnels.
Robert Pape, a military historian, told the Financial Times that destroying Fordow would likely require at least two MOP bombs hitting the same spot. He added that such an operation has never been conducted in wartime.
President Trump said wednesday that iran wants to negotiate with the U.S.,even proposing to send a delegation to the White House. Though, he cautioned that time for talks is running out, hinting at possible military action.
Any U.S. strike could trigger Iranian retaliation against U.S. bases, potentially escalating into a broader conflict. During a Senate hearing Wednesday,Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said the Pentagon stands ready to execute orders if Trump authorizes a strike.
