The United States and Iran have agreed to a conditional two-week ceasefire to halt more than a month of conflict involving the U.S., Israel and Iran. The provisional truce, which became effective on April 8, 2026, follows a period of coordinated attacks by the U.S. And Israel against Iran.

The agreement was reached after U.S. President Donald Trump issued a severe ultimatum, warning that a whole civilisation will die tonight if Iran did not reopen the Strait of Hormuz. The Strait of Hormuz is a critical shipping route used for the export of oil and other goods from the Gulf.

Terms of the Ceasefire

Under the terms of the deal, the United States has agreed to suspend bombing and attacks against Iran for a period of two weeks. In exchange, Tehran must allow shipping traffic to resume through the Strait of Hormuz.

President Trump stated on Truth Social that the provisional ceasefire was granted because the U.S. Had already met and exceeded all military objectives. The deal was mediated by Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, who announced the immediate effectiveness of the truce on April 8, 2026.

Following the agreement, President Trump indicated that the U.S. Would be talking tariff and sanctions relief with Iran. However, he also imposed a new economic penalty on third parties, stating that any country supplying military weapons to Iran would face an immediate 50% tariff on all goods sold to the United States, with no exclusions or exemptions.

Diplomatic and International Response

The escalation leading to the ceasefire drew international condemnation. UN Secretary General António Guterres and Pope Leo XIV both condemned the threats made by the U.S. President regarding the potential annihilation of a civilization.

Diplomatic and International Response

While both the U.S. And Iran claimed victory on April 8, 2026, the stability of the truce has been questioned. Iran described the U.S. Ceasefire and the accompanying negotiations as unreasonable. Reports indicate that even as the ceasefire was announced, drones and missiles continued to strike the Islamic Republic and various Gulf Arab states.

Mediation and Proposed Alternatives

Negotiations to end the wider war have been mediated by Pakistan and other nations. While the current agreement is limited to two weeks, other proposals have been floated to achieve a more lasting peace.

  • Mediating countries have proposed a longer 45-day ceasefire.
  • Iran provided Pakistan with a separate 10-point plan intended to end the war.

The current diplomatic environment remains tense, with U.S. Officials, including JD Vance, warning Tehran not to play the United States during the ongoing talks.
