A coalition of lawmakers is⁢ forming across party lines to challenge⁤ potential deeper United States involvement in ⁤the escalating conflict between Israel and Iran. These members of⁢ Congress ⁢are prioritizing adherence to the Constitution over party loyalties.

Amid signals that President Trump might increase military support for⁤ Israel, Rep. Thomas Massie, ⁢a Kentucky Republican, announced ⁤his intention to introduce a bipartisan War Powers‍ Resolution. The aim is to prevent U.S. involvement without congressional approval. “This is ⁢not our war,” Massie stated on social media. “But if it were, Congress must decide such matters according to our Constitution.”

Rep.Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a New York Democrat, quickly signaled her ‍support.”Signing on!” she posted in response to Massie’s proclamation.

Rep. ro Khanna, a California Democrat, is the co-lead sponsor of the resolution. It is structured ⁤as⁢ a privileged resolution, which guarantees a vote. Khanna urged every member to take a stand, contrasting their ⁤position with ‍those who led the U.S. into Iraq.

The ⁣message is resonating in the Senate. Sen. Bernie Sanders criticized Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s decision to launch an attack‍ on Iran. “netanyahu started this ‍war with a surprise unilateral attack against Iran, which has ‍already killed hundreds of ‍people and wounded many ⁤more,” Sanders said. he added that the attack was designed ⁣to undermine American diplomatic efforts.

What’s next

The ⁤resolution will force a debate and vote in Congress, testing the balance of power between the legislative and executive branches regarding military actions in the Middle East.
