US-Kazakhstan Ties Strengthen: Ambassador Stufft Highlights AI, Minerals & Exchange Programs

Astana, Kazakhstan – February 17, 2026 – The United States and Kazakhstan are deepening their economic and strategic partnership, with a particular focus on artificial intelligence, critical minerals and expanded people-to-people exchanges, according to remarks made by newly appointed U.S. Ambassador to Kazakhstan, Julie M. Stufft, at a press conference in Astana.

Ambassador Stufft, who arrived in Kazakhstan a month ago, described the current state of U.S.-Kazakhstan relations as the strongest in the history of the two countries. She highlighted the evolution of the relationship from its initial commercial foundations thirty-five years ago to encompass security, cultural exchange, and broader economic collaboration. “Our bilateral relationship today is the strongest it’s ever been,” she stated.

A key element of this strengthened partnership is a growing investment in artificial intelligence. Stufft revealed that approximately $3.7 billion in deals with U.S. AI companies have already been finalized in Kazakhstan. “This is the year of AI development in Kazakhstan,” she said, emphasizing the potential of the country’s young and creative workforce in this sector. Where Kazakhstan’s Foreign Minister Yermek Kosherbayev delivered a keynote address. Expanding educational and professional exchanges between the two countries is another priority. Since Kazakhstan’s independence, 22,000 Kazakh students and professionals have participated in U.S. Exchange programs, with 3,000 studying in the United States last year. Kazakhstan’s multi-vector foreign policy, which involves maintaining strategic partnerships with both Russia and China, was also addressed. Ambassador Stufft affirmed that the United States respects Kazakhstan’s approach while continuing to position itself as a “partner of choice.” She also clarified that recent temporary pauses in certain U.S. Immigrant visa categories were procedural and do not broadly impact Kazakh applicants, noting that hundreds of thousands of visas are issued weekly.
