Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, targeting his handling of military operations and the recent conflict with Iran, according to multiple international reports. The formal legislative pushes come as congressional scrutiny intensifies over the military engagement that began on February 28, 2026.

Impeachment Articles Filed Over Iran Conflict Management

Representative Yassamin Ansari, a Democrat from Arizona, announced plans to formally submit articles of impeachment against Hegseth. Ansari criticized the defense secretary for allegedly violating his oath of office and putting American service members in danger. The resolution cites several major flashpoints, including the U.S. military’s bombing of a girls’ school in Minab, Iran, and the broader targeting of civilian infrastructure during the armed conflict. Ansari’s resolution is co-sponsored by eight other House Democrats, including Representatives Steve Cohen of Tennessee, Jasmine Crockett of Texas, and Shri Thanedar of Michigan. The five-article resolution accuses Hegseth of war crimes, abuse of power, and mismanaging the Department of Defense. Lawmakers supporting the measure also claim the defense secretary failed to adequately protect sensitive military communications and obstructed congressional oversight regarding actions in Venezuela, Iran, and other regions.

Prior Scrutiny and Previous Impeachment Attempts

This legislative action marks the second time in less than five months that lawmakers have attempted to remove Hegseth via impeachment. In December 2025, Representative Shri Thanedar introduced similar articles citing controversial Caribbean military strikes and the reported use of the Signal messaging application for handling classified operational plans. Those earlier articles were referred to the Republican-controlled House Judiciary Committee, where they stalled without advancing. Constitutional hurdles remain steep for the current resolution. Removing a cabinet official requires a simple majority vote in the House of Representatives and a two-thirds conviction vote in the Senate. With Republicans maintaining control of the chamber, neither threshold is currently met.

Upcoming Congressional Testimony and Political Fallout

The political pressure surrounding the Pentagon comes amid sliding approval numbers for the administration’s foreign policy decisions. Polling indicates that public disapproval of the Iran conflict reached 53 percent in early April, while President Donald Trump’s overall approval rating slipped to 39 percent. Pete Hegseth is scheduled to appear before the House Armed Services Committee on April 29, 2026, marking his first testimony under oath since the military conflict with Iran commenced. The Department of Defense has not issued immediate public comments responding to the newly filed impeachment articles.
