The U.S. House of Representatives passed the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office Certification Act by an overwhelming vote.
The bill requires the executive branch to certify whether the three Hong Kong economic and trade offices in Washington, New York and San Francisco can extend their current privileges and immunities within 30 days of the bill taking effect. If the U.S. government certifies that the three Hong Kong Economic and Trade Offices should no longer enjoy these diplomatic privileges, the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Offices will cease operations within 180 days. The bill will be sent to the Senate for consideration and vote.
The SAR government strongly condemns the U.S. House of Representatives for using the so-called “Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office Certification Act” to slander Hong Kong’s laws to safeguard national security and discredit Hong Kong’s human rights situation. It points out that if the U.S. insists on going its own way and uses the bill to undermine the mutually beneficial relationship between Hong Kong and the United States, it will eventually harm the interests of the United States and its businesses.
