U.S. Life expectancy reached a record high in 2024, marking a significant recovery in national health metrics following the disruptions of the COVID-19 pandemic and a surge in drug overdose deaths.

According to data from the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS), life expectancy at birth for Americans rose to 79.0 years in 2024. This represents an increase of 0.6 years from the 78.4 years recorded in 2023.

This figure is the highest level on record since the government began tracking the measure in 1900, surpassing the previous peak observed in 2019.

Comparison With Peer Nations

Despite the domestic record, the United States continues to lag behind other wealthy and similarly sized nations. Data from the Health System Tracker indicates that the average life expectancy in comparable countries was 82.7 years in 2024.

This creates a gap of 3.7 years between the U.S. And its peer countries, which include Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, France, Germany, Japan, the Netherlands, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom.

The gap between the U.S. And these peer nations has narrowed slightly, decreasing from 4.1 years in 2023 to 3.7 years in 2024. This improvement is attributed to declining age-adjusted mortality rates for COVID-19, drug overdoses, and certain chronic diseases within the U.S.

While U.S. Life expectancy increased by 0.6 years, the average life expectancy in peer countries remained relatively stable, increasing by only 0.1 years during the same period.

Drivers of Mortality and Recovery

The recent rise in life expectancy is largely seen as a rebound from the pandemic. Robert Anderson, the chief of the statistical analysis and surveillance branch in the division of vital statistics at the NCHS, stated that the trend may just signal that we’re back to some semblance of normal post-pandemic.

The recovery follows a period of significant decline. Data published in the American Journal of Public Health documented a progressive deterioration in U.S. Life expectancy growth rates starting in 1983, with a sharp drop from 2020 to 2021, where the rate was –0.97 years per annum.

The 2024 increase is linked to the continued decline in deaths from drug overdoses and the stabilization of COVID-19 mortality.

Demographic and Regional Disparities

Gender differences in longevity remain more pronounced in the U.S. Than in peer nations. On average, life expectancy for women in the U.S. Is 4.9 years longer than for men, compared to an average gap of 4.2 years in comparable countries.

Health experts caution that the overall increase in national life expectancy masks significant internal disparities. While the national average has hit a new high, substantial differences in health outcomes persist among various populations within the United States.

Historical data also shows that the U.S. Has faced a growing disadvantage globally. Between 1933 and 2021, 56 countries across six continents surpassed U.S. Life expectancy, reflecting a long-term trend of the U.S. Falling behind other nations in this key health metric.
