Tens of thousands of people gathered for May Day rallies across the United States on May 1, 2026, protesting the Trump administration’s immigration policies and the economic impact of the U.S.-Israeli war on Iran. The demonstrations, part of a nationwide effort coordinated by the May Day Strong coalition, focused on wealth inequality, rising energy costs, and the crackdown on immigrant communities.
The May Day Strong coalition, which comprises 500 labor and community organizations, organized more than 3,000 events across the country. Organizers described the mobilization as a day of power
intended to demand a government that prioritizes workers over billionaires. Key demands from the coalition included the abolition of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and higher taxes on the wealthiest Americans.
Immigration Protests and Airport Disruptions
In the Bay Area, protests targeted the administration’s immigration agenda. At San Francisco International Airport (SFO), demonstrators organized an ICE out of SFO
rally, calling for an end to deportation operations at the facility. According to an SFO spokesperson, protesters blocked the departures-level roadway at the international terminal between 11 a.m. And 1 p.m. On May 1, 2026.

The disruptions extended to the Oakland airport, where terminal roadways were also temporarily blocked. Law enforcement arrested several individuals during the SFO demonstrations, including Bay Area elected officials. Supervisor Rafael Mandelman was among those arrested while standing with demonstrators blocking the road in front of the terminal.
In Minneapolis, organizers noted that the stakes for this year’s May Day were higher following a recent surge in ICE activity in the city. Many groups adopted a boycott strategy with the slogan No work, no school, no shopping
, urging citizens to cease daily activities to protest the immigration crackdown.
Economic Concerns and the Iran War
The 2026 May Day rallies were heavily influenced by the global economic climate, specifically the rising energy costs and shrinking purchasing power linked to the war on Iran. International Workers’ Day protests in the U.S. Mirrored global trends, with activists calling for peace and higher wages to offset inflation.
In Washington, D.C., activists and organizers shut down 4th and Pennsylvania Avenue on May 1, 2026, to observe both May Day and D.C. Statehood Day. These demonstrations were part of a broader narrative of working-class mobilization against what organizers described as a billionaire takeover of the government.
Global Context of May Day 2026
The U.S. Protests were part of a worldwide wave of Labor Day activity. In Paris, activists held street protests calling for better working conditions and peace. In Istanbul, Turkiye, union members scuffled with police while attempting to march toward Taksim Square.
Reports from Manila, Philippines, indicated that protesters burned effigies of U.S. President Donald Trump, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. Trade unions globally emphasized the need for solidarity as the U.S.-Israeli war on Iran continues to raise concerns about the stability of the global economy.
