Julich Reflects on Junior Cycling National championship Win
Updated May 26, 2025
As the USA Cycling National Championship unfolds in Charleston, West Virginia, former cyclist Bobby Julich recalls his own experience winning a national championship. He emphasizes the honor and dedication required to earn the stars and stripes jersey.
Julich initially pursued cycling as cross-training for downhill skiing. Though, he soon realized his potential on two wheels. He recounts winning an unlicensed junior event, the Red Zinger Mini Classic, in 1985. At the time, he was unaware of the distinction between licensed and unlicensed races.
Inspired by Alexi Grewal and Connie Carpenter-Phinney’s Olympic gold medals and the movie “American Flyers,” Julich’s dedication grew.Regular training rides with his father evolved into sessions with local juniors in Grand Junction, Colorado. A conversation with another young cyclist ignited a desire to compete for the Colorado State Championship and, ultimately, a national title.
In 1987, Julich achieved his goal, winning the national road race in the 14-15 age category on the Morgul Bismark circuit near Boulder. He proudly wore the stars and stripes jersey for a year, a memory he cherishes.

While Julich dreamed of wearing the jersey in the Tour de France, his junior national title remains a meaningful accomplishment. He extends his congratulations to the 2025 national champions, hoping their achievements inspire future cyclists.
