sam Burns carded a stellar 5-under 65 in the second round of the U.S. Open, establishing himself as the man to catch. At Oakmont, only a handful of golfers managed to break par in the challenging conditions. Burns’ performance propelled him to 3-under overall.
World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler narrowly made the cut, which is projected at 7-over. Scheffler posted a 71, scrambling wiht four birdies against five bogeys to finish at 4-over.
Viktor Hovland of norway surged early, highlighted by a chip-in eagle. Though, a mixed back nine resulted in a 68, placing him at 1-under.
Rory McIlroy began his round later in the day at 4-over, facing increasingly difficult course conditions.
“With the way I was hitting it,it was easily a day I could have been going home and I battled pretty hard to stay in there,” Scheffler said.
“Around this golf course I don’t think by any means I’m out of the tournament,” he added, remaining optimistic.
