Oakmont Presents a⁣ Tough ‌Test‍ at the US open

‌ Updated June 12, 2025

Oakmont Country Club is living up to ⁢its reputation as “the toughest test in golf” at the US Open. The course’s challenging conditions, reminiscent ⁤of the high scores seen in⁤ past‌ US Opens held there, are separating contenders from pretenders.

Rory McIlroy, the world’s No. 2 golfer, experienced this firsthand. After a solid start, including a 392-yard drive, Oakmont’s demanding layout ⁣pushed ⁣back. McIlroy landed in deep rough on⁣ the fourth hole,⁢ requiring three ⁣shots to escape. He carded a bogey after sinking a 30-foot ‍putt. Further struggles⁤ on the ⁣15th and ‍16th holes, followed⁢ by ⁣a double bogey on the ⁤eighth, added to his challenges.

McIlroy has a strong US Open record, with six consecutive⁣ top-10 finishes⁢ and two runner-up finishes. He aims to improve in the second round to remain competitive at Oakmont, where he previously missed the cut in 2016.

What’s next

McIlroy⁢ will need to adjust his strategy and improve his accuracy to navigate Oakmont’s treacherous conditions and⁤ contend for the US⁢ open title.
