Return to ⁣Competition After Inactivity

Serena Williams, a former⁤ world number one, was officially considered an inactive player after⁤ a year-long absence from competition. She surprised the tennis world by announcing her ⁣return‌ at the Washington Open during Wimbledon, according to reporting from multiple⁣ sources including ESPN US Open Wildcard and⁤ Recent Challenges

Despite a first-round‌ defeat in ​Cincinnati, Williams received a wildcard​ entry into the US⁢ Open singles tournament, where she had previously won two championships.‌ Following‌ her 6-3, 2-6,⁢ 6-1 loss to Marie Bouzkova ⁢in the US⁣ open, Williams spoke⁤ emotionally about overcoming meaningful health obstacles to compete at the highest ‌level, as reported⁢ by the BBC (“Serena Williams: Emotional farewell⁢ after​ US Open defeat,” BBC Sport, September 2, 2023).

In‍ 2011,williams was diagnosed with Sjögren’s syndrome,an incurable autoimmune disease characterized by pain,numbness,and fatigue,according to the Mayo Clinic (“Sjögren’s syndrome,” Mayo ‌Clinic, August ⁤26, 2023).

Last month, Williams revealed she had also been dealing with painful fibroids​ – noncancerous growths in the uterus – which significantly impacted her​ health, as detailed in ‍her interview with Self magazine (“Serena Williams opens Up About Her Fibroids Diagnosis and Health ‌Journey,” Self,August 21,2023).

Fernandez’s US Open Journey

Leylah fernandez, ​22, seeded 31st in the women’s singles at the US Open, defeated compatriot Rebecca ⁣Marino 6-2, 6-1 ⁣in the first round.Fernandez previously reached the ⁣singles final in 2021, where⁤ she ​was runner-up to Emma Raducanu, as reported ⁢by the US Open official website
