Montgomerie: Oakmont US Open Course Still “Brutal”

Colin Montgomerie⁣ believes Oakmont Country Club, this ‍year’s US Open venue, remains as demanding as it was when he‍ suffered a playoff ⁣defeat there ⁢in⁤ 1994.The US Open returns to‍ the Pennsylvania course,⁣ nicknamed “The ‍Beast,” for a record tenth time ‌this week, ​promising a⁤ stern test of championship golf adn a true test of US Open strategy.

Reflecting on ‌his near-miss 31 years ago, Montgomerie said,‌ “it was brutal then.” He surged to ⁣the lead after a⁤ second-round 65 ⁤and finished tied at‌ five-under with Ernie els and Loren Roberts. However, a final-round‍ 78 in the Monday‌ playoff saw Els ultimately triumph over Roberts after two extra holes. the US Open ultimately eluded Montgomerie, ⁣who⁤ had ⁣five runner-up finishes in major championships.

Montgomerie,‍ now 61, ⁤anticipates ​a return to ⁤the US Open of the 1990s, where⁣ accuracy is paramount. “The USGA ‍have gone back to a US⁤ Open of the 90s, which​ was hit ‌the fairway, that’s number one,” he said.He believes the champion will ⁢be the player with the most‌ complete game, requiring skill with ⁢the driver, ‍iron play, chipping, and putting.
