The men’s singles quarterfinals of the US Open tennis tournament (USA/New York, hard, Grand Slam) were held on the 4th (local time 3rd) in Japan, with the 12th seed T. Fritz (USA) and 20th seed F. Tiafoe (USA) making it to the quarterfinals and competing in the semifinals. Therefore, no matter who wins, an American player will advance to the finals.
Fritz defeated M. Berrettini (Italy) and 8th seed C. Ruud (Norway) to advance to the quarterfinals. In the quarterfinals held on the 3rd local time, he defeated 4th seed André Zverev (Germany) 7-6 (7-2), 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7-3) to advance to the semifinals of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time.
Fritz will face Tiafoe in the semi-finals. Tiafoe is 26 years old and ranked 20th in the world, having made it to the quarterfinals in 2022 and the quarterfinals last year. He defeated B. Shelton (USA) and A. Kovacevic (USA) to advance to the fourth round of this tournament, and then defeated 28th seed A. Popyrin (Australia), who had defeated last year’s champion N. Djokovic (Serbia) in the third round, to reach the quarterfinals.
The semi-finals on the 5th will see a showdown between two American players, Fritz and Tiafoe. The winner will advance to their first Grand Slam final. It will be the first time in 18 years since Roddick in 2006 that an American man has advanced to the US Open final. At the time, Roddick lost to Roger Federer (Switzerland) in the final and finished as runner-up.
If either Fritz or Tiafoe wins, it will be the first time an American man has won the U.S. Open in 21 years, since Roddick in 2003.
