The US Marine Corps is set to deploy HIMARS (High Mobility Artillery Rocket System) units along the Nansei Islands, which stretch from Kyushu to Yonaguni near Taiwan. In critical situations, temporary bases may be established on populated islands.
According to the report, the Japanese military is expected to assist with logistics for the Marine units, including supplying fuel and ammunition.
Kyodo also noted that the US Army plans to send long-range fire units from the Multi-Domain Task Force to the Philippines.
The Japanese and Philippine defense ministries have not provided immediate comment. Meanwhile, the US Embassy in Manila declined to comment, while China’s Embassy in Manila acknowledged the Kyodo report.
China continues to build its military capacity, increasing pressure on Taiwan, which has its own government but is claimed by China as part of its territory.
Washington has been strengthening its alliances in the region and has angered China by regularly deploying ships and fighter jets in the Taiwan Strait and the South China Sea.
