US Responds to Russia’s Nuclear Doctrine Changes Amid Heightened Tensions
Washington DC – The United States is not surprised by Russia‘s recent announcement about changes to its nuclear doctrine approved by President Vladimir Putin. The U.S. stated that Moscow had indicated its intent to amend its nuclear weapons usage policy in recent weeks.
A spokesperson from the National Security Council made the statement in response to the Kremlin’s declaration about an updated nuclear doctrine. The new doctrine suggests that Russia may consider using nuclear weapons if it faces a conventional missile attack supported by another nuclear power.
“We are not surprised by Russia’s announcement regarding their updated nuclear doctrine,” the spokesperson said. They noted that Moscow had already signaled its intentions to make this change over the past few weeks.
The spokesperson also criticized Russia’s move as irresponsible rhetoric, calling it similar to the messages observed over the past two years. However, they emphasized that Washington does not see a need to adjust its own nuclear posture in response.
“Given that there is no change in Russia’s nuclear posture, we do not see a reason to adjust our nuclear doctrine in response to Russia’s statements today,” the spokesperson concluded.
