The Gaza Strip has entered its twelfth month of war, with no signs of a ceasefire or release of hostages in sight. The conflict, which began after Hamas invaded southern Israel on October 7, has caused widespread destruction, thousands of deaths and injuries, and a catastrophic humanitarian crisis in the Strip, home to approximately 2.4 million people.
Recent airstrikes and artillery fire have rocked the besieged Palestinian Valley, killing at least 17 more Palestinians, including women and children, in the northern cities of Jabalia and Gaza. UNRWA Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini has spoken out on the issue.
Israel and Hamas have been exchanging accusations of obstructing a ceasefire, while Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu faces internal pressure for a deal that would release hostages taken during the Palestinian movement’s offensive.
Thousands of protesters gathered in Tel Aviv and other cities, including Jerusalem and Haifa, carrying banners that read, “Your hands are stained with blood” and “Who’s next?” in reference to the killing of six hostages whose bodies Israel recovered from the southern Gaza Strip.
In Gaza, medics reported that at least 61 people were killed in Israeli army strikes across the Strip. The Jabalia refugee camp said the attack targeted Hamas gunmen operating from inside the school complex.
Gaza’s health ministry reported that the number of Palestinian martyrs had risen to 40,972 and the number of wounded to 94,761 since the start of Israeli military operations in the territory on October 7.
The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) confirmed that nearly one million displaced people in the southern Gaza Strip did not receive food rations last month due to difficulties reaching food aid distribution centers and continued Israeli bombardment.
In the West Bank, Israeli forces have arrested at least 35 Palestinians, including former prisoners, and summoned a female citizen over the past two days. The Prisoners’ Club and the Prisoners and Ex-Prisoners Affairs Authority reported that the arrest operations were distributed across the majority of the Western Governorate.
US Envoy William Burns, director of the CIA and head of the American negotiating delegation to end the war in Gaza, said that a more detailed proposal on the ceasefire in the Strip would be presented in the coming days. Burns stated that he was working hard on “innovative texts and formulations” with Egypt and Qatar to reach a ceasefire by finding a resolution that satisfies both sides.
In Jordan, the interior ministry opened an investigation into a shooting on the other side of the King Hussein Bridge, known in Israel as the Allenby Bridge, after authorities announced the killing of three Israeli civilians.
