The claims that a new immigration policy will mirror the United States’ recent crackdown under President Donald Trump are "completely wrong," according to New Zealand’s Immigration Minister Erica Stanford.

In an interview with Radio New Zealand (RNZ) on May 13, 2026, Stanford dismissed comparisons between New Zealand’s proposed changes and the aggressive enforcement tactics seen in the U.S., where mass deportations and heightened ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) activity have sparked widespread economic and social disruption.

A policy rooted in fairness, not fear Stanford emphasized that New Zealand’s approach is fundamentally different, focusing on "fairness, compassion, and targeted enforcement" rather than large-scale raids or punitive measures. "Our system is designed to ensure those who are here legally are protected, while those who break the rules face consequences—but not through fear-based tactics," she said.

The minister’s comments come amid growing international scrutiny of the U.S. Immigration strategy, which has been linked to economic slowdowns in immigrant-heavy communities. A recent study by economists Chloe East and Elizabeth Cox, published in May 2026, found that Trump administration deportations had a "chilling effect" on local economies, reducing employment opportunities even for U.S.-born workers.

New Zealand’s measured approach Unlike the U.S., where ICE operations in cities like Chicago and Minneapolis led to protests and public backlash, New Zealand’s immigration enforcement has historically relied on administrative processes rather than high-visibility raids. Stanford noted that the government’s priority remains supporting legitimate migrants while addressing irregular migration through "proportionate and humane" means.

Public and expert reactions While some opposition parties have called for stricter border controls, Stanford rejected the idea that New Zealand should adopt a U.S.-style enforcement model. "Our values are different," she said. "We don’t believe in creating a climate of fear—we believe in building trust."

Immigration law experts, including those at Victoria University of Wellington, have similarly warned against adopting punitive measures, citing New Zealand’s reliance on migrant labor in key sectors like agriculture and healthcare.

What comes next? The government is expected to release further details on its immigration policy in the coming weeks, with a focus on streamlining visa processes for skilled workers while maintaining robust border security. Stanford stressed that any changes would be "evidence-based and community-informed," avoiding the disruptive tactics seen in the U.S.

For those seeking updates, the New Zealand Immigration Service (NZIS) website remains the official source for policy developments.
