The recent imposition of high US tariffs has sparked concern among Swiss businesses. But Ypsomed CEO, Simon Ritter, remains optimistic, outlining strategies for companies to mitigate the impact and avoid long-term damage. Federal President Keller-Sutter has voiced uncertainty about the duration of these tariffs, raising the stakes for businesses reliant on the US market.
The Immediate Impact & Concerns
The immediate concern for many Swiss companies is the disruption to supply chains and increased costs. Ritter acknowledges that some businesses can absorb a temporary halt in deliveries for a few weeks or a month, but emphasizes that relying on this as a long-term solution is unrealistic.
“We entrepreneurs cannot simply hope for the best. We need to be proactive and develop options,” ritter stated in a recent interview wiht SRF.The uncertainty surrounding the tariffs’ longevity is especially troubling. As Federal President Keller-Sutter pointed out, the duration remains unclear, making long-term planning incredibly tough.
Ypsomed’s Strategy & Potential Solutions
Ypsomed, a leading manufacturer of injection and infusion systems, is blessed to have diversified production locations. This allows them to shift production away from Switzerland to avoid the tariffs. However, Ritter recognizes that not all companies have this flexibility.
He proposes several potential solutions for businesses facing challenges:
Collaboration: Companies could pool resources and establish a production facility on the US East Coast. Ritter notes the availability of existing industrial space in the region.
Hybrid Production: A strategy involving manufacturing individual components in Switzerland and final assembly in the USA could circumvent the tariffs.* Diversification: Exploring alternative markets and reducing reliance on the US market is a crucial long-term strategy.
These options, while requiring investment and adaptation, offer a pathway to navigate the current trade landscape. Ritter’s message is clear: adaptation is key.
A Measured Outlook – Avoiding Panic
Despite the challenges, Ritter expresses confidence in Switzerland’s resilience. He believes the country will weather this storm, dismissing fears of economic collapse due to the Trump governance’s policies.
“Our country won’t fall because of Trump,” he asserts.
This optimistic outlook, coupled with proactive strategies, provides a reassuring message for Swiss businesses grappling with the uncertainty of US tariffs. the key takeaway is to avoid paralysis and actively explore solutions to maintain competitiveness and protect long-term viability.
