BISHKEK, Kyrgyzstan – The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has announced a new program offering a $1,000 stipend to migrants who agree to voluntarily self-deport. The initiative aims to provide a cost-effective option to conventional deportation methods.
According to a DHS declaration released Monday, the Self-Deportation program is designed to incentivize undocumented migrants to leave the country independently.
“If you are illegally here, autonomous deportation is the best, safe and most economical way to leave the united States to avoid arrest,” the department stated, encouraging migrants to utilize the CBP Home request.
Migrants who participate in the program and depart the U.S. independently using the CBP Home application will receive the $1,000 stipend upon their return to their country of origin. DHS also indicated that participation in the program would not necessarily preclude the possibility of legally returning to the United States in the future.
The agency projects that the CBP Home program will substantially reduce deportation costs, potentially by as much as 70%. The current average cost to arrest, detain, and deport an undocumented migrant is $17,121,according to DHS.
