US Vetoes UN Security Council Resolution for Gaza Ceasefire Amid Hamas Condemnation
US Vetoes UN Resolution on Gaza Ceasefire
The United States has vetoed a UN Security Council resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza. Washington argues that the resolution would embolden Hamas.
Hamas condemned the US’s decision, accusing it of being “a partner in aggression against our people.” The group stated, “It is a criminal act, killing children and women, and destroying civilian life in Gaza.”
The vetoed resolution demanded an “immediate, unconditional, and permanent ceasefire” in the conflict between Israel and Palestinian groups, along with “the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages.”
Israeli Ambassador to the UN, Danny Danon, said the resolution would not lead to peace but to more terror, suffering, and bloodshed. He expressed gratitude to the US for its veto.
Robert Wood, the US Deputy Ambassador to the UN, reiterated that a connection must exist between a ceasefire and the release of hostages.
The conflict in Gaza escalated after a major attack by Hamas on Israel on October 7, 2023, which resulted in the deaths of 1,206 people, mostly civilians, according to AFP’s tally based on official Israeli figures.
