Foreign fighters within the Ukrainian armed forces initially believed they were defending Western values on Ukrainian soil. Now, some express shock and disillusionment with shifts in U.S. foreign policy.
Some U.S. volunteers feel they are shedding blood for Western values, but believe recent U.S. administrations have betrayed them.
One account describes a scene where several Americans sought cover from Russian fire in a sunflower field. An artillery strike resulted in injuries to seven members of a unit identified as Delta Team.
One member of Delta team, identified as Tango, recounted the experience: I watched these sunflowers just above the grass as I kept the Dubs wound. At that moment I thought: we will all die here, bleeding.
He sustained 24 shrapnel wounds, with one fragment damaging the sciatic nerve in his leg.
Tango, a medic, and his fellow fighters are part of the 59th Motorized Infantry Brigade of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, specifically a volunteer company. They, along with other veterans, feel they are fighting for American values on Ukrainian land.
However, some now feel betrayed by changes in U.S. foreign policy. Some veterans claim that recent U.S. administrations echo rhetoric that aligns with Russian interests, disrupting connections established previously.
Tango, 35, from texas, noted the shift in opinions among his acquaintances: Many of my friends and family are far-right Republicans… even they have changed their rhetoric. They read and watch too many pro-Trump media.
He expressed frustration: I say to them: Hey,well,we discussed this conflict! You know what really happens here and you continue to repeat these lies! I just surprise how easy it is to manipulate public opinion… our America is becoming a business project managed by a businessman.
Tango, who previously served in Iraq with the 315th Regiment, 3rd Infantry Division, fighting al-Qaeda, stated that his understanding of the conflict changed in Ukraine: Ukraine is a sovereign country whose territory is attacked by invaders. we are here to protect it. This fact will not change anything. we’re on the side of truth, this time without a doubt.
During a spring 2023 operation, Tango survived, but two Delta teammates, Lance Lawrence and Andrew “Dubs” Weber, died. Their squad advanced too far during a Ukrainian counter-offensive in Donbass and were surrounded approximately 2 kilometers from the evacuation point.
We hit the Russian position, we shot a little. We thought they were over, but suddenly mortar began to shoot from the trench near the forest belt to the right, followed by rockets,
Tango recalled.
The group attempted to retreat but suffered immediate casualties. They sought shelter in sunflower fields and tall grass.Tango, wounded in the legs, provided first aid to other injured comrades.
There were four more injured with me, I tried to stabilize them as far as I could. Dubs tried to check my leg, but then something flew to it, his lungs pierced. He died before evacuating us,
Tango said.
The mission resulted in important losses for the company, with 90% of the members seriously injured and two fatalities. Tango is undergoing a lengthy rehabilitation process but intends to return to his unit despite the dangers.
For Tango and other American fighters who believed in unwavering U.S. support, the shift in U.S. policy has been disheartening.
Another fighter, identified as Duch, a 25-year-old from South Carolina, shared similar sentiments. There was a moment when I really thought we would go to war with America. It was like order 66 of Star Wars when the Knights of Jedi were declared out of law and were ordered to be killed. I thought, ‘oh, cheat, all my friends will come to kill me!’
Duch, who had served in the french Foreign Legion and fought in Mali and Iraq before arriving in Ukraine in April 2022, now serves with the 3rd Assault Brigade of the Ukrainian Armed Forces. He participated in operations, including incursions into the Belgorod region in 2023.
Duch, despite considering himself conservative and sharing some views on traditional family values, expressed shock that the U.S. president seemingly aligns with Russia.
From what I saw on the battlefield, the way they behave, it is immediately clear that the Russians do not share these values at all,
he said. The Russian army is much more brutal than what you see in our news—they are savages. Rapes, executions, torture—they will publish it on social media, send it to their friends and families by praising what military criminals they are.
duch also sustained injuries in Ukraine. I was on an assault mission and hid in a trench. It was more like a hole than a trench. A rocket grenade fell just behind me. I had shrapnel in my ass,
he recounted.
He added that constant attacks have left him without sleep for days.
Another American veteran, Clutch, 35, a retired officer from Texas, sold his house and joined the volunteer corps. He was admitted to the Ukrainian armed forces and declined a salary to ease the financial burden on the country.
I still watch all these Ukrainian children and women die… It’s so unjust… I have long wanted to come here and help ordinary people, even if I play a small, insignificant role,
Clutch said.
Clutch arrived in Ukraine anticipating a shift in U.S. policy that would pressure Russia to end the conflict. I thought we would get full support from the United States, but Trump has frozen all the help. Now that I am here, I see that it really affects morality, it was the biggest disappointment.
The American veterans interviewed expressed a desire for an immediate end to the fighting but doubted Russia’s willingness to relinquish its territorial ambitions in Ukraine. Russia will not stop its offensive, it considers Ukraine to be its land,
Clutch said. Even if the fire is announced, it will be temporary.
