Updated May 26,2025
For the first time in 92 years, USA Hockey captured gold at the IIHF Men’s Ice Hockey World Championship, defeating switzerland 1-0 in a tense overtime final in Stockholm. Coach Ryan Warsofsky emphasized the significance of the victory, stating it erased a long-standing source of embarrassment for the program.
The gold-medal game was a goaltending battle. Tage Thompson, the Buffalo Sabres center, ended the stalemate 2:02 into sudden death. Thompson, on a 2-on-1 with Logan Cooley, used Swiss defender Jonas Siegenthaler as a screen and fired a shot past Leonardo Genoni.
Despite the loss, Genoni was named tournament MVP, allowing just seven goals in seven games with a .953 save percentage. Switzerland, the tournament’s highest-scoring team, was shut out in the final for the second consecutive year.
Jeremy Swayman was perfect in his second world championship appearance, posting a 7-0-0 record with a 1.69 goals-against average and a .921 save percentage. The American team, the tournament’s second-highest scoring team, averaged 24 years old.
The victory followed a dominant 6-2 win over host Sweden in the semi-finals, ending a 12-game losing streak at that stage. While the United States won gold at the 1960 and 1980 winter Olympics, the IIHF does not count Olympic gold toward world championship totals.
Earlier on Sunday, Sweden claimed the bronze medal with a 6-2 victory over Denmark.
In a stunning quarterfinal upset, Canada, featuring stars Sidney Crosby and Nathan MacKinnon, was eliminated by Denmark. The Danish team, playing on home ice, secured their first-ever knockout round win.
Thompson’s performance followed his omission from the 4 Nations Face-Off roster. Clayton Keller, captain of the Utah Mammoth, also had a strong season after missing the 4 Nations cut.
This world championship win caps off a accomplished year for USA Hockey, with gold medals at the 2025 world junior championship and 2025 women’s world championship.
What’s next
With the IIHF World Championship title secured, USA Hockey now looks toward the 2026 Winter olympics, where general manager Bill Guerin will finalize the roster. Several players from the world championship team hope to bolster their chances for Olympic selection.
