Pope Francis and Netanyahu Discuss Gaza Crisis, Church Attack

Vatican City – Pope Francis engaged in a significant dialog wiht Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, addressing the escalating crisis in Gaza and the recent tragic incident at the Holy Family Church.The Vatican conveyed its deep concern for “all the faithful and all the people in Palestine and Israel.”
A “Good-Natured and Friendly” Exchange
An official from Netanyahu’s office described the hour-long conversation as “good-natured and friendly,” noting that the Prime Minister extended an invitation to the Pope to visit Israel.
Regarding the church incident, Netanyahu expressed “regret” for what he termed a “tragic accident,” attributing it to “wandering ammunition that accidentally hit the Holy Family of gaza.”
Cardinal Pizzaballa’s Mission and the Pope’s Condemnation
pope Francis also spoke with Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa,the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem,to ascertain the situation in Gaza and the conditions of Father Romanelli and others injured at the Holy Family Church. The pontiff unequivocally labeled the attack as “unjustifiable.”
Cardinal Pizzaballa, who visited Gaza with the Greek-Orthodox Patriarch Theophilus III to meet with Christians and deliver aid, reported on the discussions. This “humanitarian initiative” received support from the Italian government, with Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani requesting Israeli authorities to “totally guarantee the safety of the two sent.” The attack on the Church of Gaza has further galvanized the international community in its calls for a cessation of hostilities.
Stalled Hostage Negotiations and Ongoing Violence
During the meeting, Prime Minister netanyahu briefed the Pope on Israel’s efforts to secure an agreement for the release of hostages and a 60-day ceasefire, asserting that Hamas had not reciprocated this commitment.
Conversely, the Palestinian faction’s armed wing, the al-Qassam Brigades, accused the israeli state of rejecting a proposal that “provided for the release of all the hostages at one time.” Amidst this apparent stalemate, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have not indicated any slowdown in their operations. Al Jazeera reported approximately 40 Palestinians killed since dawn, including ten individuals near food distribution sites. Among the day’s casualties was an 18-month-old girl,reportedly killed by bombs and suffering from severe malnutrition.
