United States Secures Victory in Group C

In the final week of the Davis Cup team tennis tournament, the United States emerged victorious against Chile in three straight games in the first round of Group C. The tournament, held in Zhuhai City, followed a best-of-three format.

Obi Ka Leads the Charge

In the first singles match, the United States’ Obi Ka, ranked 115th in the world, faced off against Chile’s Garland, ranked 309th. Despite the ranking gap, Obi Ka secured a 6-3 win, hitting a decisive diagonal shot.

The 16 participating teams were divided into four groups, competing in a singles round-robin format. The top two teams in each group will advance to the next round. Group C also features Germany and Slovakia.

A Thrilling Match

Obi Ka’s victory was not without its challenges. He failed to win in straight games and was broken by Garland once, ultimately securing a 6-4 win to tie the game. In the third set, Obi Ka overcame a break opportunity, capitalizing on Garland’s double fault to win the game 7-3.

Brandon Nakajima’s Comeback

In the second singles match, Japanese-American player Brandon Nakajima, ranked 40th, faced Chile’s Tabiro, ranked 22nd. Despite being the underdog, Nakajima won the first set 7-5, lost the second set 2-6, and ultimately secured a 7-3 win in the third set.

United States Secures a 3-0 Victory

The United States, a 32-time champion, defeated Chile 3-0 in straight sets, making a strong start in the finals week. The team’s victory was sealed with a win in the final doubles match.
