Amnesty International Calls US Veto of Gaza Ceasefire Resolution ’Shameful’
Updated June 07, 2025
Amnesty International has strongly criticized the United States’ decision to veto a UN Security Council resolution that called for an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, the release of hostages, and the unrestricted entry of humanitarian aid.The organization views this action as a ”green light” for Israel to continue its current military operations, which it says are endangering Palestinian civilians.
Agnès Callamard, Amnesty International’s secretary general, stated that the U.S. has missed another critical possibility to demand an end to the bloodshed. She questioned the justification for blocking UN action that could alleviate suffering, free hostages, and ease restrictions on aid. The organization is calling for an immediate ceasefire to address the humanitarian crisis and ensure the survival of millions of Palestinians facing starvation and deprivation.
The organization emphasized israel’s obligations under international law, as the occupying power, to ensure adequate access to food, medicine, and essential supplies for the population in Gaza. Amnesty International also stressed that all states, including the U.S., have a duty to prevent genocide and cooperate to end and punish those responsible.
The US can and must do its part to put an end to this manmade catastrophe, which it has contributed to.
Agnès Callamard, Amnesty International’s Secretary General
Amnesty International dismissed Israel’s newly established humanitarian aid scheme, run by the U.S.-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, as inadequate and contrary to humanitarian principles. The organization cited the deaths and injuries of Palestinians attempting to access food as evidence of the scheme’s ineffectiveness and danger. They insist that only the complete lifting of restrictions on humanitarian aid will suffice.
What’s next
Amnesty International is urging the U.S. to promptly halt arms transfers and military assistance to Israel, press Israel to lift all aid restrictions, and push for an immediate ceasefire by all parties to ensure the survival of 2.2 million Palestinians in Gaza.
