Washington is intensifying pressure on Ukraine and Russia to expedite negotiations toward a peace agreement, even as discussions continue regarding a separate raw material agreement between the U.S.and Ukraine.
Rubio Calls for Decisive Action
U.S. Secretary of state Marco Rubio emphasized the urgency of the situation. “This week is critical. We must decide whether to continue our involvement in this project or shift our focus to other pressing matters,” Rubio stated, speaking on U.S. television. He stopped short of setting a firm deadline for progress, deeming it “unrealistic.”
Stumbling Blocks Remain
While acknowledging progress, Rubio indicated that significant hurdles remain. “We’ve made strides, but the final steps are always the most challenging,” he said. He cautioned that the U.S. cannot indefinitely dedicate resources to the peace process without tangible results.
US Eyes Ukraine’s Rare Earths
Concurrently, negotiations continue on a raw material agreement between the United States and Ukraine. National Security Advisor Mike Waltz noted ongoing weekend negotiations, stating, ”The Ukraine deal will come about.” The U.S. aims to secure access to Ukraine’s natural resources, particularly rare earth minerals vital for high-tech industries.
Raw Material Agreement Status Unclear
A declaration of intent for the raw material agreement was signed in mid-April, with the final signing initially planned for Saturday. The reason for the delay and the current status of the agreement remain unclear.
