Stockholm—Tage Thompson’s overtime goal propelled Team USA to a 1-0 victory over Switzerland in the ice hockey world championship final at avicii Arena on Sunday. This win marks the first time in 92 years that USA Hockey has claimed the title on the ice.
The emotional victory saw Team USA players holding up a No. 13 jersey of Johnny Gaudreau, the former NHL star, who tragically died last August. Gaudreau and his brother were struck by a driver while cycling in New Jersey.
Ryan Warsofsky, coach of the San Jose Sharks, acknowledged Gaudreau’s presence during the celebratory locker room speech. “Johnny was f—— here, watching this one,” Warsofsky said.
